Kevin Hicks has seen first hand how cycling can transform young people’s lives. He has watched kids grow in confidence and strength, emotional and physical, over the course of two-week bike trips exploring historic routes.
In mid-July, a few weeks ago, my friend and fellow PYO (Partners for Youth Opportunity) student, Tyee, and I biked from Chapel Hill to the Outer Banks — a distance totaling over 700 miles — with Triangle Bikeworks. I was a senior at the Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College when I wrote this serving as a Partners for Youth Opportunity intern with the Durham VOICE.
Eleven local teenagers will have quite a story to tell when they return to high school in the next few weeks. They recently completed a 700-mile bike ride as part of the "Bikes, Water and Soul Tour" organized by the nonprofit Triangle Bikeworks.
